Barwell through in FA Vase

-

BARWELL picked up an impressive victory against Carlton in The Buildbase FA Trophy writes Luke Pawley

In a convincing display the scoreline should have been multiplied by three or four.

Matt Stenson had a great chance after just five minutes for the hosts, bringing the ball down and hooking his effort over from eight yards.

Just five minutes later, the only goal of the game arrived as numerous Barwell bodies were shooting at goal from inside the box, and the ball came off the back of Carlton defender Riece Bertram and into the back of the net.

Luke Barlone and Owen Story then both hit the post within two seconds for Barwell, and Stenson and Story went on to create further chances.

Barwell will have been very frustrated with the half time scoreline, as they didn’t let Carlton Town into the game at all.

With their manager’s words ringing in their ears, Carlton created more chances in the second half through Robbie McNicholas and Aaron Hooton, but their efforts weren’t enough to trouble the Barwell goalkeeper.

The visitors rolled the dice three times with their substitutions, but they were unable to score one goal they needed to earn a replay.

Barwell’s Ben Baker, on loan from Kettering Town, had a fantastic chance to put the game to bed in stoppage time, but his weak shot rolled wide.

Following the match, Barwell manager Jimmy Ginelley said: ““There’s one objective in cup football: you’ve got to get through to the next round, and we’ve done that.

“I don’t think we were in any danger, it’s just a shame we couldn’t put four of five of our chances away to give the supporters a bit more.”

Jimmy also commented on the surprise departure of striker Kyle Perry who only recently joined the club.

The manager said: “Very disappointed to see Kyle go.

“We need a focal point up front.

“Luke Barlone’s still coming back from his injury, so we’ve missed Kyle a little bit today.

“The reason for Kyle leaving is some issues he has at home.

“I don’t want to talk about it too much, but I pat Kyle on the back for doing the best thing for his family.

“He’s virtually doubled his money and we can’t do anything about it, so I wish him all the best.”
