Service of Remembrance in village

-

BURBAGE Infants and Junior School held a Remembrance Service in Pughe’s Paddock along with members of the public.

Also attending were parish council chairman Mr Stanley Rooney and councillor Mrs M Sherwin.

With approximately 700 people in attendance this year it was a very special event. The service was led by Reverend Andrew Hall, Rector of St Catherine’s Parish Church with the children themselves taking part.

Abide With Me was sung and the National Anthem. Wreaths were laid by the children before they sang We will Remember Them and afterwards they read poetry and led the prayers of the community.

Rev Hall said: “Looking out upon the sea of faces was an emotional moment as I regarded our children leading this act of Remembrance with solemnity, peace and grace, befitting the grandest of stages.

“As we gave thanks to God for our freedom - won for us by those brave souls who fought in both world wars and conflicts around our world - I was aware that something great was taking place before our eyes.

“We speak today of British values and virtues; indeed, this morning I witnessed this in its greatest form. I am sure that our children too will remember this act for many years to come, and it will have shaped their lives and the lives of others.

“I am indebted to Mrs K Allen Headteacher of both schools and her staff. Today was a historic day for our village and we give thanks to them for making it a memorable one.”
