A MASSIVE steampunk festival is being held in Leicester this week.

Swarms of enthusiasts clad in a mix Victorian garments teamed with futuristic accessories will meet up at the National Space Centre for ‘Steampunks in Space’ from Friday, November 24-26.

The event has been hosted by the Leicester based science and discovery centre for the last five years and has attracted tens of thousands of people during this time.

A post on the Space Centre site, describing the event said: “Steampunk is a creative and inventive movement that mixes fantasy and fiction.

“If you love vintage and retro you might already know about its rise in popularity.

“Indeed, the word ‘steampunk’ was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2010.”

The event will kick off in the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium on Friday, November 24, with a launch night from 7.30pm to 11pm.

Visitors will be entertained by some of the world’s finest steampunk acts, including Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer.

A brand new Steampunk Space Race exhibition, commissioned by the National Space Centre, will open over the weekend.

There will be a vintage mobile cinema, afternoon tea concerts, radio plays and a live Steampunk escape room experience.

Saturday evening entertainment, from 7.30pm to 11pm, includes a quiz and two bands performing in the heart of the Centre’s galleries.

Steampunk is a style of design and fashion that combines historical elements with technological features inspired by science fiction.

The event is open to all visitors and a day ticket to the Centre includes all the daytime content at no extra cost.

Tickets to the evening events are still available and can be purchased on the website.
