We just need to get on and make Brexit happen

-

IT sometimes seems that each week the same usual suspects, take time off from composing horoscopes to hector in the Hinckley Times Letters pages, without reply.

I generally pay my pound and enjoy the articles but only scan the Letters page as it can appear “pretty thin gruel”.

I did however, notice that two letters, “just asking” and “just saying” took a lot of column inches and raised some interesting points whilst ignoring others. Taking a reasonably educated view, on which I based my vote, I would submit the following in reply.

On 2016 figures £240Bn was exported from the UK to EU while 54% of UK imports, £320Bn were from the EU, a negative £80Bn, of which Germany alone represented £26Bn adverse in trade.

The EU’s share of World Market trade is shrinking, UK trade with the rest of the world is negotiated by the EU on behalf of the whole EU.

By definition “the number of decisions made by a committee is inversely proportional to the number of members on that committee” hence it takes so long to do a deal with the EU or agree any action, as exhibited recently with the Canada and Catalonia issues.

Since Maastricht, 1993 , UK are in credit payment estimated at €148,479million (money-go-round.EU) and currently our contribution is running at approx. €11.5Bn per year Net. We also have credit in the European Investment Bank of €10.2 billion. The claim, that we receive investment from the EU and that it would disappear, is a myth. It is already our money and on leaving, we can decide where to place it.

The Fishing Industry and communities supporting it, can be revitalised. 6 million tons per year is taken by the EU, 3 million in UK waters and UK share? 750K. Dutch electro fishing methods have already decimated the seas from 12miles out but they still have licence to fish in our waters, granted by EU authority.

With respect to manufacturing; major corporations and their suppliers will still be able to claim EU cash to move their businesses from Country to Country as Ford, GM, PSA and VW have done, witness Ryton, Luton and Southampton but not with our contribution any longer. Our manufacturing can be rebuilt as per Land Rover/Jaguar. It is also notable that Honda Swindon, Toyota Burnaston and Nissan Washington are highlighted on the respective Companies’ Worldwide Performance charts, for top Production Performance and quality.

With respect to legislation, we have seen how British Standards often exceed those designated by the EU.

All the above can be fact checked, unlike the suppositions made by the doom sayers in their theses.

The Irish question was resolved at the Good Friday Agreement by the Blair chap. As soon as the Republican population outnumbers the Unionists, a ref- erendum will be called and Ireland will unite the 6 Counties with the other 26 giving the bill to the UK. We might as well complete this now..

In summary, why should we pay to stay in a club that engineered a currency, whereby one nation’s currency is artificially held low at the expense of devastation in the economies of others, is totally unaccountable to anyone, is wasteful and unaudited in its accounts, is proceeding towards being a Federation of States with its own Armed Forces, Banks and Tax Collectors (something we were assured would not happen), and is of benefit only to the Large Corporations, Banks and Financial Investors and to the detriment of entrepreneurs, small businesses and the people as a whole.

There is a big world out there and at present we cannot interact with most of it. No need for horrorscopes , we just need to get on with it. Full stop.
