Racer Archie takes top award

-

AN AMATEUR racer from Peckleton has won a national championship.

Archie Clark, 8, roared to victory in the British MSA (Motor Sports Association) Bambino go-karting Championship, building on an excellent first few rounds, in which he achieved maximum points.

The junior racers competed across the country, including at the West of Scotland Kart Club near Glasgow, as well as in Cumbria, Devon, and other parts of the UK.

Archie’s brother Ben, 7, also took part, coming in ninth place.

Mum Debbie said: “Archie is the most determined little kid I’ve met.

“When it was pouring with rain in the middle of winter, he just wanted to keep going and do a few more laps.”

The mini-racer is now getting to grips with an IAME kart, which can hit top speeds of 60mph, as he moves up to the Cadet class, competing with racers up to the age of 13.

He has already tried his hand in two of the Cadet races, taking the Novice trophy at the heats in Rowrah in Cumbria, where he climbed from a starting position at the back of the grid to take fourth place.

Archie studies at Grace Dieu Manor School in Thringstone, which Debbie says “couldn’t be more supportive” of his endeavours on the track.

He trains on Wednesday evenings, usually at the Whilton Mill track in Daventry.

Petrol runs in the blood of the youngster’s family, as his grandfather Roger was a rally driver, and his dad Olly has competed at events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
