OVERWEIGHT men can shed the pounds in the new year, as a new football league comes to Blaby.

Man v Fat Football is a 16-week tournament which has helped thousands lose weight with its weekly 30-minute games, which will be running at Blaby and Whetstone Youth Club from January 2018.

The game has blossomed in popularity since launching in Solihull two years ago, having featured on BBC’s The One Show and in many national newspapers and other media outlets.

Blaby District Council is partfunding the league, offering players 20 per cent off the cost of each session.

Competitors who live outside of the district are eligible for the discount.

The new league will be the first in Leicestershire, joining over 40 other tournament across the UK.

Teams get points for how much weight they lose as well as for winning games, with bonus goals up for grabs for the teams who shed the most pounds.

Councillor Iain Hewson, portfolio holder for Health Improvement, Leisure and Regulatory Services, said: “I encourage people to sign up as soon as possible to secure their place in the first league season.

“Man v Fat is a unique league which gives men a chance to play football every week and get the support they need to keep the weight off.”

The first meeting of registered players is at Blaby and Whetstone Youth Club on January 31, 2018, from 8pm to 10pm.

The league runs from February 7 until May.
