Hinckley Sunday League celebrating 50 years of football
THE Hinckley & District Sunday Football League will be celebrating 50 consecutive years of providing Sunday morning football at the end of this season, with three original members of that committee still participating in 2017, Jeff Bray, Rodney Richardson and Mick Moore.
In 1967 most local Sunday football was played in the afternoon, but the Hinckley League were instigators of Sunday morning football, thus enabling players and managers alike to enjoy their Sunday pint or two in the pubs afterwards.
Many pubs sponsored clubs in those days but sadly most have long since disappeared, but there are still a few supporting our teams.
In those years some very strong teams have come through the league and gone on to win many trophies in the county.
Some referees and linesmen who started as young men with the league, learnt their trade and went on to reach ‘The Football League’, a fantastic achievement.
Two major stalwarts of the league sadly died recently, namely Ray Grewcock and George Hayes.
We are now desperately in need of several younger people to come forward and take on the duty of running local Sunday football in the area for the foreseeable future, to keep up the proud tradition of the Hinckley & District Sunday Football League.
The league is grateful for the coverage that it continues to receive from The Hinckley Times with which it has a long relationship, a relationship which allows us to promote both the league and the grassroots game in general ensuring the continuation of the game on a Sunday morning.
