Ice makes life hard for anglers with matches cancelled

- with Richard Wade

IT WAS a bad weekend for local anglers as Saturday’s big freeze put a thick layer of ice on lakes while Sunday’s snow made travel almost impossible.

Matches were cancelled, with Shackerstone’s final round of the Instylelifting Winter league now arranged for the New Year.

Hinckley’s Stu Campton, who runs the Sunday Brookfield Open matches at Stoke Golding, did try to get there.

He made it to Stoke Golding before deciding to turn back.

The journey home took him nearly two hours!

Thursday’s Higham Lane Open was fished on an ice fringed lake.

Mick Linnett used bomb and corn tactics on peg 23 to catch 32lb 7ozs of carp.

In-form John Varley finished second with 24lb 7ozs while Clive Oliver came third with a level 22lb catch.

Last weekend’s Lutterworth & District angling Club’s outing to the Lizard Pool on Makins Phase Two can only be described as hard!

Ian Stripp took the honours from peg 26 with a 29lb 6oz catch.

Colin Clarke sat on the next peg, 27, and finished second with a 27lb 8oz catch.

Phil Neep was third with 17lb 7ozs while Tony Simonetti finished fourth with a 13lb 6oz catch.

There are matches planned for this weekend, subject to the weather.
