Bosworth record league and cup double over Oakham

-

LAST Saturday saw Market Bosworth get back to winning ways with a victory over Oakham.

This was not only a win and a try bonus point in the league but the match was also taken as round one in the County Cup giving Bosworth progression to the next round.

The game however, started very uneventfully and although the ball had been moved to both ends of the pitch there was no score after fifteen minutes.

Bosworth eventually won a scrum about ten metres out and continued to push Oakham back over their own line for Ricky Wickwar to open the scoring.

Frustration in the Oakham ranks led to some indiscipline and the referee sending them back an extra 10 metres to allow Rich Harris to put anoth- er three points on the board.

As half time approached the Bosworth backs demonstrated what they are capable of by passing the ball right and left to let Tom Randon run in the second try.

The conversion upright.

The second half started favourably for Bosworth when Joe Randon made a break hit the passing out to Sam Balance to go over under the posts for Joe to kick the conversion.

For a while there was a lot of technical kicking from both sides which got neither of them anywhere until a the ball was collected by Wickwar who ran nearly the length of the pitch before passing to Will Clarke who was unfortunate to be bundled into touch just before the line.

Oakham cleared their line and advanced into the Bosworth twenty two only for full back Lewis Brightmore to mount an attack which resulted in a line out on the five metre line.

This was followed by a couple of scrums, all won by Bosworth, with the ball passed to Will Clarke to go over in the corner.

Straight from the restart the Bosworth backs again demonstrated some fantastic handling moves penetrating the Oakham defence and with the forwards now getting involved enabled Ollie Green to touch down over the line and Joe Randon to convert.

With more of the same confident play the rampant pack this time charged over as a unit for Ben Thompson to claim the try only for the referee to decide that he would award a penalty try instead.

Ben Thompson’s unstinting efforts at tight head prop this season earned him the Man of the Match Award this week.

In the final minutes of the game Oakham found some energy from somewhere and started to pass the ball about which they had been unable to do until this stage giving their winger a clear run in to avoid a whitewash but without the conversion.

With the final whistle approaching Bosworth mounted one last display of handling manoeuvres providing the opportunity for Chris Harding to add to the final tally.

Final score Market Bosworth 44 – Oakham 5.
