Councillors behaved like they were in the school yard

-

ON December 6, I went to Leicestershire County Council’s HQ at Glenfield to watch and support a motion asking that the council give support for fair transitional arrangements for 1950s women affected by the state pension changes and the lack of notice.

The motion as follows… This Council calls upon the Government to reconsider transitional arrangements and compensation for women born in the 1950s affected by the changes to the SPA.”

I will not go into detail about the WASPI (Women Aginst State Pension Inequality) cause as it can all be found at www.waspi.co.uk.

The campaign is not what I am writing about at this moment. The reason I am writing here is to relay to the public about the behaviour of some of those people in that chamber.

Whilst there were many passionate speeches from supporters of the WASPI cause I was particularly disgusted by most of the Tories and their attitudes.

How do some of them get elected for one thing? Some are like dinosaurs who should know better and retire from their positions and let some younger people stand for election.

They are so shallow in their thinking and so old fashioned and even sexist towards women. They towed the party line just like those in Parliament, and would not lend their support.

Unlike approximately 130 councils across the land who have lent their support for 1950s women. Some do not have the guts to vote with a conscience for fear of getting rebuked by their fellow councillors. Do voters really know what they let themselves in for when they vote these people in?

It seemed that before the matter was to be discussed the Tories had already made up their minds before the debate had started.

During the debate, most of the Tories did not listen to anybody else. They even mocked some of the passionate speakers who are trying to right the wrong. It was like being in a schoolyard. Some spent the afternoon on their mobile phones. Why did Madam Chairwoman not tell them to put them away?

When a Tory was asked why he voted the way he did his answer was ‘he was thinking about him and his wife’s future.’ Does that not tell you how selfish and uncaring the Tories really are? Is that working for the people?

Some of those old men and women in that chamber should move out of the way for younger people. Some of the old men are clearly Mysoginists and outdated in their thinking.

All the Tories care about is their own backs and how far they can climb up the social ladder. They are still the nasty party and I hope that one day very soon voters will get a grip and see them for what they really are. Linsey Williams, by email
