PROFITS at Leicestershire’s Triumph motorcycles continue to race ahead thanks to a 7,000 rise in the number of models rolling off the production lines to 63,404.

The Hinckley motorbike giant – the UK’s biggest bike maker – said turnover hit £498.5 million in the year to June 30, up by £91 million.

Pre-tax profits were also substantially up – increasing by £8.1 million to £24.7 million.

The figures top off a great year for the business, which is owned by the Measham-based Bloor housebuilding family.

In November it opened a £4 million visitor experience and factory tour at its huge plant on Hinckley’s Northern Perimeter Road.

The priceless display includes bikes ridden by Steve McQueen, Tom Cruise and David Beckham, alongside land speed record holders from the 1960s and the very latest custom designs.

Among them are the actual bike – a fully restored 650cc Triumph TR6R – ridden by Steve McQueen in The Great Escape as well as the Speed Triple used by Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 2.

And in October Tri- umph unveiled two new models – a new Bonneville Bobber, offering a “hot rod ride and sound” and a laid-back Bonneville Speedmaster cruiser.

Announcing the latest annual results, a company spokeswoman said: “In the face of continuing challenging economic and currency conditions, including Brexit, Triumph Group has performed strongly and has maintained its commitment and investment in research and development, with a view to furthering the continuous improvements of its products.

“The group has continued to develop its excellent motorcycle range launching five new motorcycles in the last 12 months to include the new Street Triple, the new Bobber Black, the new Speedmaster and the new Tiger 800 and Tiger 1200 adventure motorcycles.

“It has also continued to demonstrate its commitment to meeting customer needs, with the opening of a £4 million Factory Visitor Experience at its Hinckley base.

“Triumph is excited about the future and is committed to delivering its long-term vision through investment in the company’s people, facilities and product that fuses character, heritage and performance to ensure the success of the brand.”

Triumph has been building bikes in Hinckley since 1991 and employs hundreds of people at the vast site off Dodwells Road, where it is currently spending around £10 million on new design facilities and a new paint shop.

The business employs around 2,000 personnel worldwide and has subsidiaries in North America, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Benelux, Brazil, India and Thailand as well as a network of independent distributors.

It has manufacturing facilities in Hinckley and Thailand and assembly plants in Brazil and India.
