Another car pulled from Watery Gate

A FIRE officer has urged motorists to take more care to avoid floodwater after two more cars got stuck this weekend.

On Saturday - two weeks after fire crews had to rescue two men stranded on the roof of their car in Watery Gate Lane, Thurlaston - another car fell foul of deep floodwater at the same spot.

And later that night, five fire crews, including a specialist rescue unit, were called out after a family got stuck in their car in Slash Lane, Sileby.

Fire crews from Leicester’s Central and Southern fire stations, together with colleagues from Loughborough, responded shortly before 8pm to a car stuck in around eight inches of water in Slash Lane.

These pictures show a car in deep water in Watery Gate Lane, Thurlaston, at around 3.30pm Saturday.

The poster said: “Another one stuck on Watery Gate Lane.

“I just saw the one vehicle in the ford and two people trying to attach it to another car to tow it out.”

Two weeks ago, on December 15, Market Bosworth Police posted pictures on their Facebook page of a rescue operation by firefighters after two men from Birmingham, thought to have been following their sat nav, got into difficulties at the same spot.

Tim Hiskens, a station manager with Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, who attended the Slash Lane incident, said: ”It wasn’t the greatest depth of water, it was only about eight inches.

“The water collects under the bridge. Drivers must take care in these conditions.

“With the depth of the water involved, he was either going too fast or it was the type of car.

“When we respond to an incident we always send the appropriate resources.

“We don’t know the depth of water we’re going to find and the difficulty involved in a rescue.

“There were four people in the car, so it could have been quite an involved rescue effort.

He added: “There is still an awful lot of flood water around from the rain we’ve had and melting snow.

“Generally, people should avoid driving through floodwater because you don’t know what’s underneath the surface, drain covers could have lifted and you could get a wheel stuck.

“If you must drive through it, go slowly and know what lies ahead of you.”

He added: “We always have problems with Slash Lane and Watery Gate Lane - the clue is in the name of the roads.

“If people took notice of signs warning of flooded roads we may not have to commit resources which may be required elsewhere.”
