CARNIVAL organisers in Barwell have donated £3,000 raised from the 2017 event to good causes serving the village and charities operating further afield.

A Share the Wealth ceremony held in AFC Barwell’s pavilion saw beneficiaries of all ages turn out to receive a share of the community proceeds.

The event was presided over by carnival chairman Mathew Hulbert and parade and field officer Beverley Robinson, with presentations made by Barwell Carnival Association president Gail Smith.

Recipients from the village were Barwell and Earl Shilton Disability Group, Barwell Scouts, Barwell and Earl Shilton Lions, AFC Barwell, Harvey House Care Home residents’ comfort fund and a village group for retired men.

Each of the them was involved with the carnival, helping with preparations and on the day itself, as well as attending the carnival association’s monthly meetings.

Donations were also made to the Barwell yarn-bombers and the chosen charities of the mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth, Cllr Ozzy O’Shea, which are the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Police Dependants’ Trust, as well as to ten-year-old Logon Morris, from AFC Barwell, who designed the front cover of this year’s carnival programme.

And in memory of former association president Gordon Spring, a donation was also made to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides real hair wigs to children who have lost hair through cancer treatment or illness.

Mr Hulbert said: “Carnival day 2017, the 71st consecutive event, was a fantastic and well enjoyed occasion, which saw villagers turn out in large numbers to watch the annual procession of floats, walking floats and marching bands and enjoy the stalls, arena attractions, fair rides and more on the Carnival field.

“Carnival day also raises money for charities and not-for-profit groups in the village.

“Our Share the Wealth event is always a great occasion and it was fantastic to be able to give back to the groups who are doing wonderful work locally and who do so much to help with the carnival.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to again thank all of the members of the Barwell Carnival Association. “We couldn’t do it without them.” The association is always looking for new members and anyone interested can follow on Twitter @BarwellCarnival on Facebook or email Mathew at mathewhulbert@hotmail.co.uk
