Cinema is unsafe

Former Danilo and Cannon cinema has been empty for years

-

POLICE in Hinckley have revealed the state of the town’s old Danilo Cinema after they were called to reports of a break-in.

Officers and a dog unit entered the building last Thursday.

In the end the four people they found inside confirmed they had just gone in to have a look - but police clearly weren’t impressed.

In a lengthy Facebook post one officer wrote: “I urge anyone who has this temptation to think twice as the internal foundations of this building are extremely dangerous and can cause serious harm.

“The flooring has been eaten away by damp and wood rot, broken glass and loose nails are scattered all over the location.”

He added: “We had to put our own safety at risk and search the building to ensure no other persons were in there.

“Please think, before you do.”

The future of the historic structure is uncertain, with developers keen to replace it with flats and apartments.

But with the area already saturated with flats, and short on parking spaces, any proposed development would have to meet strict requirements.

It opened in 1937 and showed films until 1993.

There had been hopes it would re-open as a cinema, but the new Cineworld built as part of The Crescent development in the town centre appears to have put paid to that proposal.
