Comfortable win despite absentees

-

ON paper this should have been an easy game for Market Bosworth as they were at home to the bottom side, Pinley writes Harry Whitehead.

However with a few players away on skiing holidays the Bosworth three-quarter line was an unknown quantity.

As it turned out there was nothing to worry about because the team played well, particularly in the first half.

From the kick off Ricky Wickwar was able to make a break and get Bosworth into Pinley’s twenty two where they camped for ages, attacking well against a strong Pinley defence, until the referee awarded Bosworth a penalty in front of the posts, for offside, which Rich Harris duly kicked to open the scoring.

A rolling maul got Bosworth to within five metres of the line only for Pinley to get the ball clear but Bosworth got another rolling maul going and this time Ricky Wickwar crossed the line in the corner for an unconverted try.

Bosworth piled the pressure on keeping Pinley in their own half all the while with Tom Harvey going over in the same corner for another unconverted try.

This was quickly followed by an impressive display from team captain Jack McWhirter who sliced through the Pinley defence to score the third try which Rich Harris converted making the half time score twenty points to nil.

Up until half time Pinley had been very negative in their play, slowing things down by repeatedly questioning the referee’s decisions, but a more positive attitude evolved from the restart.

From a penalty kick to touch in the Bosworth twenty two Pinley won the ensuing line out and created a rolling maul which reproducing a scene from an international match a few seasons ago they piled thirteen players into and forced themselves over for a try and conversion.

This move seemed to be Pinley’s only trick in the book as they tried a similar move again shortly afterwards but Bosworth had cottoned on by then defending well to prevent the score.

The game then developed into a very scrappy affair with Bosworth being dragged down to Pinley’s way of playing and getting a couple of yellow cards on the way.

Bosworth did however keep attacking and got to within five metres of the line for scrum-half Randon to squirm over for the bonus point try.

Unluckily Rich Harris’s conversion attempt bounced back of the posts.

The final score Market Bosworth 25 – Pinley 7.
