Christmas has come and gone and the credit card bill is due to arrive...

- With Peter Bolton of the Hope Community Church

CHRISTMAS has come and gone, but it’s effects live on, no not the extra few pounds and inches.

But the dreaded credit card bill, it seemed a good idea at the time to buy those extra bits.

The heart sinks when the bill is on the doormat and in need of paying, more debt.

Debt is a big issue for many people struggling to get by on what they have coming in.

Thankfully there are a few organisations out there who will help people sort out the debt, not simply the Christmas one, but through the year debt as well.

The Bible has much to say about debt, the cancelling of debt etc.

But the Bible speaks of a good debt. Is it possible for there to be good debt? Surely debt is owing something to someone else?

Paul in one of his letters he wrote recorded in the Bible says ‘owe nothing to anyone, except for your obligation to love one another’.

Paul is not saying debt is wrong, he is saying it is good to pay it off as soon as possible, but the debt or obligation to love others should be ongoing.

This is a good debt! To love others, how that would change the world we live in, if individuals were obligated to love those around them. Financial debt effects the lives of many people, it robs them of peace, they often feel anxious, but love has a completely different effect.

We are able to love one another, God in who’s image we are made loves us with a love beyond our understanding, He is love and we are to follow His example of loving others, God loves us, even when we think we are the worse person in the world, God loves us.

One debt that would transform our lives today is the debt or obligation to love others, it would be good to see this debt grow more and more in our nation and the world in which we live.
