Store pledges support for centre

-

DONATED food and goods from a Hinckley supermarket will contine to help users of a community centre in Barwell throughout 2018.

In 2017, Sainsbury’s at The Crescent in Hinckley announced that it would be supporting the George Ward Centre in Barwell with weekly donations of unsaleable items that might otherwise go to waste.

Workers at the Church Lane centre collect trolley loads of food and other items from the town centre store each Tuesday and sort them for distribution to people in need as well as benefiting community and children’s groups and people living further afield.

In addition to items donated by the store, customers are invited to leave personal donations in a collection box close to the tills, which was said to be especially wellsupported during the Christmas and new year break.

George Ward Centre manager Lesley Pratt said: “We’re delighted to be receiving so many donations from the generous customers and colleagues at Sainsbury’s Hinckley who have helped to raise awareness of our cause.

“These items will benefit local people suffering from food poverty and we’re looking forward to continue working with the store in 2018.”

Store manager John Davies said: “Our customers are very generous all year round and we hope to see even more food donated to help people in the local community who may be at risk of going hungry in the new year.”

Sainsbury’s says that 80 per cent of its stores now have a collection point for customers to donate long-life food to nominated good causes.
