The Dean of Leicester to speak at event
EVENTS are going on in Hinckley to celebrate LGBT History Month themed around Geography: mapping our world.
An afternoon of reflection and celebration is taking place at St Mary’s Church, with the Very Reverend David Monteith, Dean of Leicester speaking at the event.
The service will be led by organisers the Reverend John Whittaker, vicar of St Mary’s, and the Reverend Angela Tarry, curate at the church.
St Mary’s community choir will be performing as part of the event and there will be refreshments and informal speeches afterwards.
The event is free to attend and open to everyone.
Rev Whittaker said: “St Mary’s Church has valued being able to host a service and reception marking LGBT History Month for several years.
“This year we are so pleased that the Dean of Leicester has agreed to speak.
“We hope this event, to which everyone is welcome, will help us appreciate some of the challenges LGBT+ communities face in different parts of the
world as well as the great strides made in countries and cultures receiving the joy and richness of diversity.”
Matthew Hulbert is also giving a talk at Hinckley Library in Lancaster Road entitled Near and far...the fight for LGBT+ equality.
He will be speaking about the importance of LGBT History Month and what it means for Hinckley and Bosworth.
Everyone is welcome to attend and refreshments will be provided.
Organisers hope the events will raise the visibility of LGBT people, their history and lives, and how to advance educa- tion with regard to them.
Mr Hulbert said: “It’s so fantastic that LGBT History Month is once again being celebrated in our town.
“Our LGBT+ communities add to the richness and diversity of our borough and it’s right that we mark this annual occasion with what we hope will be interesting and insightful events. “We’ve come a long way in recent years in terms of increased equality, but there continues to be a long way to go, especially in the fight for equality and justice for transgender and non-binary individuals.
“We look forward to many people joining us for these special events.”
The service at St Mary’s is on February 3 at 5pm, while the library talk is on February 17 at 2pm.
