Teams slug it out in latest round of Dry Logic Cup

CUP Table Tennis returned with the second round matches taking place recently.

In the Dry Logic Cup all the matches were close but the closest was the game between Queen’s Barwell and Hit’n’ Hope the final result was 5 sets to 4 to Queen’s Barwell, they raced into a 3 sets to 1 lead but then Hit n Hope hit back with fine wins but Ian Nixon over Chris Taylor (QB), followed by Bryan Moylan (HnH) also defeating Taylor and then John Harrison (HnH) over Alan Morris (QB) to level the scores at 4 games all.

Steve Lawton (QB) won the vital ninth set over Nixon to secure a slender 5 sets to 4 victory.

Cat H overcame G Ward C in another tight encounter.

Cat H who have been picking up some good wins in the league raced to a 3 sets 1 lead,

GWC rallied taking two of the next three sets to bring the score to 3sets -4 in favour of Cat and the Gary Rhodes (Cat H) beat Chris Thomas (GWC) and then Steve Crutchley (Cat H) completed yet another maximum to secure victory by 6 sets to 3 for Cat H.

Cat F defeated their own E team in their clash, despite three wins for Alec Downes (Cat E) he could not prevent his team going down by 5 sets to 3.

Both Phil Woods and Peter Mason (Cat F) collecting two wins apiece.

The final match in the Dry Logic cup was between Division 2 leaders G Ward D and their own F team.

A keenly competitiv­e match was expected and it did not disappoint.

Man of the match was twelve years old James Walker (GWF) who was outstandin­g for his maximum, including a huge victory over Oliver Wynne (GWD) in a five game set, collecting the win 11-9 in the fifth.

Connor Harris (GWF) overcame Callum Dale (GWD) also in a five game set running out winner 11-7 in the fifth.

In the Holt Trophy Goons easily overcame Cat B by 5 sets to 1.

Both Jason Woodfield and Harry White were undefeated for Goons whilst Andy Searle collected the one win for Cat B over Ian Wetherley.

Another close match saw Cat A overcome Barlestone A by 5 sets to 3. Barry Taylor(Cat A) taking the eighth set to secure victory for Cat A.

G Ward A fought through despite only having two players to secure a tight 5 sets to 4 victory over Queen’s Mira, Mark Perkins ( GWA) winning his three with Leigh Morris (GWA) taking two wins losing only to Dan Hagan (QM).

The quarter finals draw will take place on Friday January 26 with ties to be played week commencing February 19.

In the Midland Vetts League Division Two Hinckley secured a good away win at Mansfield by 0 sets to nil.

The team of Pete Jamieson, Alex Mason and Jason Woodfield did not have it all their own way however and no fewer than seven sets went to either four or five games.

This result sees Hinckley firmly top of the table with 24 points from three games, Coventry A are second with 16 points from three matches.

The Hinckley B team are not faring quite so well having drawn only one match and losing their other two games.

Currently they are bottom but one with eight points from three games with only Nuneaton B below them on seven points from three matches.
