Dance video wins national contest

DANCERS back flipped through The Crescent complex in the town centre to wow the nation and bag £1,000.

Nimble youngsters from Original Movements, based at the Centre of Performing Arts Hinckley studio in Holliers Walk, won a national contest to come up with and film their own take on This Is Me, the anthem for new film The Greatest Showman.

The school had to re-create dance moves shown by one of the movie’s choreographers and then video their own version, including a few moves of their own, overlaid with the music from the soaring theme song.

Two dance groups from the studio, So Damn High and Fallen Angels, joined together over two weeks to rehearse and record the video, with 12 performers appearing in the final video.

Matt Hogg, who teaches at Original Movements, said: “We decided to use The Crescent as it provided a different backdrop and we thought it might give us the edge in the competition.

“We were quietly confident as we compete up and down the country all the time, so we always go in with the hope of winning.

“We have no idea what we will spend the money on, but it will be something for the dancers, like new costumes.”

He said that having just two weeks to prepare was quite tight given the time of year: “We had just broken up for Christmas so we had to get people to come in over the holidays but they were very happy to.

“The film is much what we about. very are

“We’ve never entered a competition where you have to produce a video, apart from when we’ve had to submit one as part of the first round of a contest.”

Ben Swinton of Swinton Aerial helped film and edit the video for the dancers.

He said: “I have an office within the dance studio and Matt asked me if I would be interested in producing a video to put towards this competition.

“It was a great experience to be able to film some truly great young dancers who acted professionally when it came to getting the footage required, even though the weather was cold and wet.

“Doing this production has opened my eyes up to what goes in to practising and learning a routine.”

The Greatest Showman is a musical film starring Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams that charts the birth of show business as a visionary rises from humble beginnings to create a worldwide theatrical hit.

The Greatest Showman is on at Cineworld in Hinckley.
