Unbeaten run goes on for Barwell

-

BARWELL extended their unbeaten run to six games with a 2-1 victory over Buxton writes Luke Pawley.

Coming in off the back of only two defeats in their last 10 games, Barwell started the game full of confidence and created early chances through the Matt Stenson and Craig Reid.

On 21 minutes, Matt Stenson did well to chase down a lost cause, and won the ball before rounding the goalkeeper and pulling it back for Brady Hickey to smash home.

After the opener, Buxton grew into the game and created chances through Liam Hardy and Ant Wilson, who both had shots blocked in the box.

On 33 minutes, after Liam Hardy’s shot crashed against the post, a Barwell defence committed a foul as bodies rushed out to latch on to the rebound. Hardy stepped up and sent goalkeeper Liam Castle the wrong way to equalise for the visitors.

Barwell recovered to regain their lead before the break, as the visiting goalkeeper fumbled a shot and allowed Matt Stenson to follow in and smash the ball home.

The hosts’ confidence and team spirit showed in the second half, although they failed to capitalise on several chances to see out the game.

Jan Butz was in fine form in the Buxton goal to keep the scores down, denying Stenson, Hickey and Craig Reid from extending Barwell’s lead.

Buxton’s frustrations showed as Ant Wilson was sent off for violent conduct in stoppage time.
