Ice axe inspires retirement adventures
TALES of an adventurous retirement were recounted by guest speaker Wendy Martin to members of Burbage WI, in a talk entitled Kilimanjaro to Kathmandu.
Since asking for an ice axe for her 50th birthday, she has climbed in Chamonix, the Matterhorn and taken the Haute route to Mont Blanc.
The day after her presentation, at which she displayed her ice pick, cramponaugmented boots and other equipment, she was due to fly to South Africa where she planned to climb Table Mountain.
She was thanked by Elizabeth Davis for an inspiring talk.
During branch business, Ann Robinson was welcomed as a new member.
A coffee morning to raise money for Cancer Research UK is to be held at a member’s home on Saturday April 14.
An outing to the RHS Malvern Spring Festival is planned for May, and opportunties for members to learn table tennis and to join an embroidery workshop are available.
Burbage WI will next meet on Friday April 13 at Grove Road Infants School, Burbage at 7.30pm.
There, the guest speaker the Rev Alison Adams will talk about her work at Glen Parva young offenders centre.
New members and visitors will be made very welcome.
