Family raises £7,500 as dad recovers from brain injury

A GRATEFUL family from Hinckley is raising funds for the groups that helped save the life of a father of four.

Mark Davey, 44, had to have part of his skull removed after he sustained a major head injury in a car crash on black ice on the A429 Fosse Way in early January.

He was put in an induced coma for two weeks and is now learning to walk and talk again, with the long term effects of his injuries still unknown.

His ex-partner Liz Davey and Mark’s four teenage children set up a Justgiving page to raise funds for Mark’s physiotherapy and emotional and mental recovery and for the air ambulance and Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The page has already raised more than £7,500 from over 200 donations, with cake sales and raffle events contributing towards the total.

Liz said: “I wanted to give something back. We’ve been amazed at the support we have received from across the borough.”

Donations have come from Hammonds, Paynes Of Hinckley, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Triumph, Industria Jobs, Croner, Jilly Flowers and Station Road Dental Practice, along with many inidividuals.

Mark works as a bricklayer and is also a coach at Hinckley Rugby Club; doctors said his good fitness will aid his recovery.

Liz said: “They say he has a long road to recovery. He has to have his brain re-trained.

“It may be three to six months before Mark has the trowel in his hand again, back on the building site with the lads - who knows.”

Liz and Mark had two twin daughters together, Amber and Lily.

She said: “The twins are 22 but it’s still been really tough for them. It’s the unknown, waiting for an update, which is so hard.

“It’s been a rough road but it’s great there’s been no animosity between any of us even though I’m Mark’s ex wife.

“We have been united and strong.”

The next step in Mark’s recovery will be to move him to a rehabilitation centre at Leicester General Hospital.

You can make a donation on his Justgiving page, which has a fundraising target of £10,000.
