-

A TWO-year-old boy and his mum have died after the car they were travelling in collided with a lorry near Rugby.

The A426 near junction one of the M6 was closed for seven hours following the horror crash on Saturday.

Police have revealed that two passengers in a blue Nissan Qashqai - a two-year-old boy and a 31-year-old woman died, after their car collided with a lorry, as they were coming off the M6 at junction 1 onto the A426 near Churchover.

Both the woman and the boy, who were mum and son, were declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, a 35-yearold man, and another passenger, a six-year-old girl, were taken to hospital with injuries.

Their injuries are not thought to be serious at this time.

The crash happened at around 10.30pm on Saturday.

Warwickshire Police, along with fire and ambulance crews attended the scene.

Inspector Andrew Bennett said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the families of the deceased at this time. Despite the attempts of other drivers and paramedics, the woman and boy were declared dead at the scene.

“We continue to investigate how this collision happened.”

Speaking as the incident was being dealt with, Insp Bennett thanked motorists held up as investigations took place. He said:“There is likely to be some disruption in the area while we investigate. I would like to thank local people for their support and patience.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of the vehicles involved in the moments leading up to the incident to contact us.”

The incident caused severe travel disruption with Highways England cancelling scheduled M1 roadworks, to create a diversion route, as a stretch of the A426, from Junction 1 of the M6 to Gibbett Hill on the A5 was closed for seven hours in both directions for collision investigations to take place.
