1oz perch lands Cooper third place to seal league win

-

HIGHAM Lane Fishery produced some decent catches in Saturday’s Open match despite a thin layer of ice covering part of the lake at the start.

Clive Oliver took the honours. Drawn on an ice free peg nine.

Clive used “bomb & corn” tactics to land 51lb 9ozs of carp for the win.

Dave Hurlston caught more fish than the winner, but they were smaller, so he had to settle for second place with 49lb 9ozs.

Jim Spradbury had to wait for the ice to melt before he .started to catch on peg 13, finishing third with 39lb 11oz, all caught in the afternoon.

Lutterworth Angling Club also enjoyed a decent day when they fished the Crater and Reptile Pools on Phase Two at Makins Fishery.

Pole fished maggot was the method that produced the top three catches with Micky Davis leading the way with a 46lb 6oz catch.

Darryl Moore came second with 43lb 5ozs while Dick Makepiece finished third with 42lb 4ozs.

The final round of Shackerstone’s Onstylelifting league was fished along the Horse & Jockey length.

Despite what seemed like a decent day the canal was at its hardest with just a few perch willing to feed and many dry nets recorded.

John Gamble took the honours, catching three perch for just 11ozs.

In-form Kev Milne finished second, catching two perch for 8ozs.

A single 1oz perch gave Kevin Cooper third place.

The winner of what was a close league was Kevin Cooper with 11 points.

Three anglers, Phil Hicks, Phil Baker and Pete Billington tied for second place all finishing with 12 points.

Higham Lane’s Thursday Open was won by Andy Findley who caught nine decent carp from peg 13 to weigh 51lb 9ozs.

Paul Houston caught just five carp on peg seven to take second place with 41lb 11ozs. Dave Massey finished third with 16lbs.

Plough Angling Club fished their first contest on the river Avon at Ryton since the end of November due to floods and snow.

Despite the river still being high there was a good turn out for the final match of the season.

Unfortuntley sport wasn’t very good, with George Martin taking the honours, landing two chub on legered worm to weigh 5lb 12ozs.

Alan Brown also caught two chub to take second place with 3lb.

A single 2lb 4oz chub gave Stan Martin third place while George Howe finished with 12ozs of small fish to finish fourth.

It was rock hard for Brookfield’s Open match at Stoke Golding where bites were at a premium.

Drawn on peg five Stu Campton feared the worst, as with just five minutes to go he hadn’t had a bite, but he managed to catch a match winning 2lb 12oz carp just before the finish. A single 1lb 2oz carp was enough to put Ray Lewis into second place while Ian Shirley finished third with a level 1lb of small fish.
