HINCKLEY has been celebrating LGBT History Month with an event at St Mary’s Church.

The main talk at the reflective service was delivered by The Very Reverend David Monteith, Dean of Leicester, while a community choir led a variety of songs and there was also a time for prayers.

The dean took the history month’s theme of Geography: Mapping the World and spoke about how to change social and physical geography towards greater acceptance of gay people.

The Reverend John Whittaker, vicar of St Mary’s, said: “We were thrilled with the LGBT+ History Month service as it was a privilege to host this for our community.

“We were exceptionally blessed by the insightful, authentic and hope-filled message of Dean David Monteith.

“St Mary’s Church is open daily to be an inclusive, welcoming community who seek to love and care for for everyone every day.

“We believe God offers love and care to us and invites us to join in with the story of unconditional love for the world through Jesus the Christ.”

LGBT+ rights campaigner Mathew Hulbert gave details about new weekly LGBT+ social and information sessions starting in Hinckley.

Proud2B began in February and will be on Tuesdays from 4pm to 5.30pm at St Mary’s Community Hall on St Mary’s Road.

Mr Hulbert said: “This service was a very special and important occasion.

“Our LGBT+ communities in Hinckley and Bosworth, of which I’m proud to be a part, add so much to our borough’s diversity, vibrancy and local economy.

“We’ve come a long way in terms of equality, but there is so much further still to go, especially in terms of further rights and equality for trans and non-binary individuals.”
