Lancaster Road closure for crossing works
WORKS to install a ramp and pedestrian crossing to The Crescent will mean the closure of Lancaster Road for almost a week.
The construction of the longawaited safety feature will be welcomed by shoppers who have often found the wide street difficult to navigate.
An expected start date for the works of February 26 has been revised with a new schedule imposed from Monday March 5 to Thursday March 8.
The top end of Lancaster Road will be closed off from the junction with Station Road to just before George Street.
This will not affect bus access to the new station pull-ins.
The bill for the crossing is likely to be £40,000 paid for through a contribution by Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and £20,000 from Leicestershire County Council - a sum left over from previous highways funding.
When the crossing was announced borough chief executive Bill Cullen said: “We’re delighted work is now programmed to deliver a muchneeded crossing facility at Lancaster Road, which will provide a safe and convenient crossing point for shoppers and visitors.
“This will complement the major regeneration work the council has spearheaded with the popular Crescent shopping and leisure scheme and will improve connectivity between The Crescent and Castle Street shopping area via Station Road.”
During the installation works the proposed alternative diversion route will involve continuing along Station Road towards the train station, turning right onto Hawley Road, then right again at the lights onto Rugby Road and right onto Lancaster Road.
