Students win places in Big Bang UK finals
THREE students from Hinckley Academy and John Cleveland Sixth Form Centre (HAJC) have won places in the national final of the Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Competition.
Sixth formers Leona Irwin, Josh Weeks and Bethan Padbury impressed the judges at a regional round of the contest with their projects entitled Revitalising Rehydration, Smoothing the Turbulence and Generating Understanding respectively.
It is the third year running that the Butt Lane school has had students presenting at the national finals.
The trio will go on to join over 200 other project teams from across the UK at the event to be held in Birmingham’s NEC from March 15 to 18.
Open to 11 to 18-year-olds, the annual competition is designed to recognise and reward young people’s achievements in all areas of science, technology, engineering and maths, known as Stem subjects, as well as helping them build skills and confidence in project-based work.
They will be competing for the titles of UK Young Scientist and UK Young Engineer of the Year and for prizes including international Stembased experiences worth more than £50,000.
Science teacher and Big Bang co-ordinator at HAJC Catherine Smith said: “It is always a delight to work with the students on their projects and see them develop into the young scientists of the future. “
