Police offer advice over tractors

-

POLICE have issued advice for tractor drivers following a number of complaints.

Market Bosworth Police said on its Facebook page that it often gets reports about tractors in relation to towing, speeding and weight restrictions.

It clarified that the maximum combined weight of a tractor and trailer is 31 tonnes, while the maximum laden weight of a trailer is 18.29 tonnes.

The post also included the information: “Tractors and trailers on public roads must comply with construction and use regulations.

“This means that any defects can leave the driver liable for prosecution.”

An operator must be at least 17 to drive the combined weight of 31 tonnes and must have the relevant category on their driving licence (F - tractor, B - car).

16 year olds can drive tractors less than 8ft wide if they have passed the category F test and so long as they only tow trailers less than 8ft wide, with two wheels or four close-coupled wheels.

The force also said: “Make sure you tow safely and within the law.

“We receive reports of drivers on mobile phones, and not paying attention to the road.

“We appreciate that you have a job to do but a 31 tonne mistake could be disastrous.”
