Borough club to host top BMX events
TWO rounds of a national BMX championship competition are to be held in Huncote.
Leicester Huncote Hornets BMX club, based at Blaby District Council’s Pavilion Leisure Centre, is to host rounds three and four of the British Cycling National BMX Race Series on from April 20 to 22.
More than 900 competitors and 3,000 spectators are expected, with riders aged from six to World Championship and Olympic standard competing.
They will be making use of the Hornets’ £150,000 BMX track which was opened in 2015 and built to Europeancompetition standards.
The club won the right to host the rounds following a bidding process to the governing body, British Cycling which is preparing to livestream each round to an audience of over 100,000 people.
Huncote Hornets director Mitch Barsby said: “We are so excited to be hosting our first national championship rounds.
“It gives us a chance to show off our incredible track to some of the best BMX riders in the country.
“We hope this to be the first of many big events at our track.”
District Councillor Iain Hewson, portfolio holder for health improvement, leisure and regulatory services, said: “This is an incredible achievement for the Huncote Hornets, and we are delighted to be a part of hosting a national event and to welcome some of the best riders in the world.
“This will bring a large number of people to the district for the weekend which will be a fantastic opportunity for local communities, groups, clubs and schools interested in BMX cycling, as well as a boost to the local economy.”
The event is being funded by Huncote Hornets and supported by Blaby District Council.
