Check prescriptions before Easter closures

-

PATIENTS in need of medication have been urged to check they won’t run out over the Easter Bank Holiday.

Over Christmas and New Year 258 patients in Leicester, Leicestershire at Rutland had to call NHS111 to get emergency repeat prescriptions.

As more bank holidays approach, health leaders are urging patients to get prepared and check they have enough medication and won’t run out while GP practices are closed.

Dr James Ogle, a GP in Leicestershire, said: “Many people with long-term conditions rely on their prescribed medication to help them keep their condition under control.

“So, if you or someone you care for requires medicines regularly, it’s important to make sure you order and collect repeat prescriptions in good time to ensure you or your family have enough medicine to last over the long weekend.

“Don’t become an emergency, make sure you’re prepared and can enjoy a happy Easter.”

GP practices will be closed on March 30 and April 2 for the Easter bank holidays so it is important for people to plan ahead, and check they have everything they need.

If someone does run out of medication when their GP practice is closed then they should call NHS 111, who will be able to assist them.

NHS 111 should be the first call for any medical need which is urgent, but not a serious or life-threatening emergency.

Over Easter, call handlers at 111 will know which services are open, including local pharmacies, and there are clinicians and pharmacists available on the phone to help those patients who need it.
