From ghostly legends to Laura Ashley

-

GHOSTS and legends of Leicestershire were summoned up in a talk by David Bell to members of Earl Shilton Evening WI.

Tales were told of the socalled ‘bleeding’ gravestone in St Mary’s churchyard in Hinckley and the gibbet post on a road near Twycross where highwaymen and vagabonds were reputedly hanged.

On a lighter note, members gave their support to Earl Shilton in Bloom volunteers who requested a nomination for Co-op communi- ty funding.

Details were finalised for a meeting of the Highcross group of WIs annual meeting, which is to be hosted by the Earl Shilton Evening branch and due to feature auctioneer Charles Hanson, known to some from his appearances on the TV programme Bargain Hunt.

Some members attended the annual meeting of the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation of WIs which attracted around around 1,400 women from across the region.

Speakers included the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire Jennifer, Lady Gretton, former MP Edwina Currie and Mandy Hickson, one of the first female RAF jet fighter pilots.

Earl Shilton Evening WI will next meet in the Pelican Centre on High Street, Earl Shilton on Monday April 9 at 7.30pm when guest speaker Jo Golby will tell The Laura Ashley Story.

Anyone wanting to find out more is asked to call Linda Bent on Hinckley 844887.
