Phantom of the Opera at the Concordia
Youth group set to perform the classic show in June
ONE OF THE most popular musicals of all time will be performed by the Concordia Youth Theatre this June.
The beloved Phantom of the Opera will be coming to stage at Hinckley from Tuesday June 19 until Saturday June 23
Based on the Gaston Leroux novel of the same name and set in the Paris Opera Populaire in 1881, it tells the story of a mysterious ‘phantom’ who lives in the opera house disrupting the lives of the players on stage.
After both he and the wealthy aristocrat Viscount Rauol de Chagny fall in love with new leading lady Christine Daaé, the phantom sets things in place for her to fall into his wicked spell but the story takes a mysterious turn.
Andrew Lloyd Webber conceived the idea of turning the book into a musical in the late 1970s, but it took the introduction of lyricists Charles Hart and then Richard Stilgoe to turn his idea into a reality.
The Phantom of the Opera opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London, in October 1986 with Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Lloyd Webber’s then wife, Sarah Brightman, as Christine.
When the amateur licence became available to youth groups in 2014, CYT quickly applied for the rights so that they could become one of the first groups in the Midlands to perform it in front of a live audience.
With an outstanding cast, lavish costumes and wonderful set, the show will be staged for five performances only.
