League title wrapped up by dominant Goons

GOONS duly took the Division One title in the Hinckley Table Tennis League with comprehens­ive wins over both Cat D by 10 sets to nil and Cat C by seven sets to three.

Goons have been the most consistent side in the Division and have ben ably led by Harry White who topped the league averages with 96.77 per cent from his games.

With no fewer than three more players in the top five of the averages it is no surprise that they clinched the title.

Nearest rivals Cat A finished the season with a seven sets to three victory over Cat C.

Pete Jamieson (Cat A) with three wins claiming the man of the match crown. Andy Spring (Cat C) collecting two wins.

In their final game Cat A overcame G Ward b by nine sets one. Another maximum for Jamieson with team mate Rhys Emery also winning his three. Third placed G Ward A completed their season with a six sets to four victory over Cat B.

Cat B took a three sets to two lead but G Ward A hit back strongly with four wins out of five in the next five sets to close out the match by six sets to four.

Bottom side G Ward E lost by two sets to eight to G W B with their reserve Callum Dale brining his Division Two form to the match, beating Richard Chesters in three straight and promptly takin a game off of both Danny Whittaker and Clive Stretton.

In their final match they went down by nine sets to one to Barlestone B.

Both Jon Jacom and Norman Weaver winning all their matches for Barlestone.

Queen’s Mira defeated Barlestone B by nine sets to one, with Ian Heavey collecting three wins for them.

Queen’s Mira found Barlestone A, a rather different class losing by six sets to four.

QM were four sets to one up before Barlestone A fought back winning the last five sets to claim the victory.

The Final table sees Goons with 163 points from 20 games, Cat A with 158 points also from 20 matches and G Ward A third with 138 points from the same number of games.

In Division Two the second spot was finally claimed by Cat H who defeated G Ward F by 10 sets to nil in their final match to claim runners up spot with 129 points, closely followed by G Ward C with 127 points.

With the league season now over attention turns to the Closed Championsh­ips, Cup Finals and the Team Challenge Handicap Knockout to take place over the next few weeks.
