Gill belly danced her way to good health after cancer

-

A CANCER survivor who belly danced her way to recovery is urging people to sign up for the course that got her back in form.

Gill Mannion, 55, took on a free fitness regime of Pilates, Nordic walking and African drumming to overcome reduced movement in her shoulder and arm following her treatment for breast cancer.

The exam invigilator from Desford was diagnosed two years ago and had to undergo a lumpectomy and radiotherapy.

She took on the eight-week Pilates-based programme Supporting Confidence Through Exercise (SCTE) and now her movement has vastly improved and she regularly.

Ms Mannion said: “I was really nervous about going along, because I’ve never been someone who goes to classes.

“But to anyone who has come through breast cancer and is scared, I’d say just do it it’s great.

“It has a serious side to it, but it’s so much fun.

“You’re with people who have been through the same experience and who understand.

“It’s helped me physically and mentally and it’s even inspired me to start going to a regular Pilates class, which I would never have done before.”

The SCTE programme was exercises launched in 2016 by Measham-based fitness instructor Michelle Scott-Worthington.

Classes are run in small groups of no more than eight and are inspired by The Pink Ribbon Programme, involving rehabilitative exercises to enhance recovery for breast cancer survivors and help them regain mobility and improve strength and posture.

The course is suitable for those who surgery was a while ago as well as recent survivors.

The scheme is funded by a SHIRE Community Grant from Leicestershire County Council.

For more information or to book on the programme, call 0300 365 9791 or visit the SCTE website.
