Queen names her county representa­tive

Lady Gretton is set to step down

THE Lord-Lieutenant is the Queen’s representa­tive in the county.

The current imcumbent is Jennifer, Lady Gretton DCVO JP. Deputy Lieutenant­s and a Vice Lord Lieutenant assist.

THE Queen has announced a new Lord Lieutenant for Leicesters­hire.

Michael Kapur will succeed Jennifer, Lady Gretton when she retires on June 14.

Mr Kapur, currently a Deputy Lieutenant, will become the Queen’s representa­tive in Leicesters­hire, fulfilling a range of civic and ceremonial duties.

Mr Kapur is 55 and lives in Oadby with his wife, Rita. They have four children.

He grew up in Derby and graduated from Leicester Polytechni­c before becoming a chartered accountant.

He co-founded Signum Corporate Communicat­ions and has served as deputy chairman of University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

Mr Kapur is chairman of the National Space Centre and Leicester main duties are to:

Arrange visits of members of the royal family and escort royal visitors

Present medals and awards on behalf of Her Majesty

Participat­e in civic, voluntary and social activity

Liaise with units of the Navy, Marines, Army, RAF and cadets.

City Football Club Trust.

He is also deputy chairman and pro-chancellor of De Montfort University, alongside other regional and national trustee roles in the education and community sectors.

Mr Kapur said: “I am incredibly honoured to have been appointed and I look forward to serving as Her Majesty’s personal representa­tive locally.

“Leicesters­hire has a wonderful, diverse community and a rich heritage. We are home to three worldclass universiti­es, innovative entreprene­urs and brilliant profession­al sports.

“I am very proud of Leicesters­hire and will do all I can to represent us to the best of my ability.

“Lady Gretton has made such a huge contributi­on to life in Leicesters­hire and is loved by everyone.

“She’ll be a very tough act to fol- low but she leaves me a strong platform to build upon.”

Lady Gretton said: “I am delighted that Mike Kapur is to be the next Lord Lieutenant of Leicesters­hire.

“He has been a very active participan­t in the business and civic life of our city and county and I’m sure he will use all his local knowledge to represent Her Majesty well.”

John Sinnott, chief executive of Leicesters­hire County Council, will continue as clerk to the lieutenanc­y.
