Smart libraries are rolled out in our area

Self-access technology

- MATT LLOYD matt.lloyd@trinitymirror.com

LIBRARIES across Hinckley are to become smart following a successful trial in the county.

Self-access technology will be rolled out across Leicestershire County Council Libraries allowing members access even when staff are not on site.

Residents who have signed up to Smart Libraries would use their library card to access the buildings, in order to borrow, return and renew items or use the public computers, WiFi and printing and copying facilities.

The roll out follows a successful trial at Syston Library which ran from early 2017.

Book groups, and other community groups are also able to use the space during library plus hours.

Anyone wishing to set up a community group can use the library as a meeting space within smart library hours.

Hinckley Library will become a Smart Library between October 1-22 while Earl Shilton will be upgraded between September 17 and 3.

Broughton Astley will be upgraded between October 15 and 29 while Lutterworth will follow in November.

Richard Blunt, county council cabinet member for libraries, said: “Having self-access technology in libraries across Leicestershire gives residents more choice of when they are able to visit the libraries catering for a much wider audience.

“The trial at Syston meant that the library was open for an extra 30 hours per week making the library much more accessible.

“We’ll be talking to local library users so that they can have their say on when self-access works best for them.”

Community engagement will be taking place at each library ahead of their move to Smart Libraries.

Library users will have an opportunity to sign up to Smart Libraries, comment on proposed staffed times and find out more about setting up community groups within the library.
