Walk, talk and keep fit after cancer

Cancer affects a lot of people

-

PEOPLE who have been affected by cancer are being encouraged to join a weekly walk in a popular Nuneaton park every Tuesday.

The Walk and Talk group meet just outside the Nuneaton and Bedworth Museum between 1.30pm and 2.30pm come rain or shine. Specialist nurses are on hand to provide advice or just listen to others.

These walks, which were originally set up for patients with breast cancer in 2015, are open to any patients who have been affected by cancer.

Walk and Talk gives people the opportunity to share their experiences, to listen to others, and to get advice from the specialist nurses. They will help you get fitter too!

George Eliot Hospital wants to encourage every- one who has experienced cancer to come along, as they often make patients feel more confident and better supported.

Friends and family are also very welcome to join the group.

Exercise and keeping fit can have a positive effect on the health and wellbeing of everyone, and this is a great opportunity to stay active during the week, whilst meeting new people.

One of the patients attending the group, Mick Gilbert said: “The aim of the group is to promote fitness, enjoy the fresh air, meet new people, and to realise you are not alone.

“The walk provides you with an informal setting to talk to others about your experiences, treatments, any side effects or problems that may be occur- ring.

”Some of the group come along every week but others come along when they feel strong enough to attend.”

Macmillan Oncology Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist, Alison Syborn said: “This is our third year of Walk and Talk and our walkers look forward to coming each week.

“It is nice gentle stroll and the beautiful setting brings cheer to patients who are either going through treatment or recovering.

“Group members come along when they can and many have made some good friendships through the group and keep in touch after the walks.”

If you would like to know more about the walks contact Alison on 0787 659 0687 or just come along.
