Cash boost from food store for library

-

RESIDENTS in Sapcote village are celebrating a cash windfall from the Heart of England Co-operative Society.

It comes after shoppers in the Sapcote branch of The Co-operative Food store, as well as those who shop in the Stoney Stanton and Barwell stores, voted for Sapcote Community Library to receive a share of £40,000.

The money has been raised through the sales of carrier bags at the Society’s network of Food stores over the past few months.

With the most votes in Leicestershire, Sapcote Community Library received £4,000.

With the second highest number of votes, Hinckley Foodbank received £2,500, while Westfield Community Centre received £1,500.

Altogether the Society distributed the £40,000 among 15 worthy causes across its trading area of Coventry, Warwickshire, south Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

Lorraine Jackson, Chairwoman of Sapcote Community Library, said half of the money will be used towards the upkeep of the library, while the other half will be used towards decorating the outside of the building, to make it more attractive and inviting to visitors and passers-by.

She said: “We would like to thank everybody who contributed to our success by placing those green tokens into the library pot.

“This reiterates to all our volunteers that the library remains an important part of our village and that our efforts are appreciated.”

Built in 1974, the library primarily serves the villages of Sapcote and Sharnford, as well as other nearby villages including Broughton Astley and Stoney Stanton.

With 3,000 books on its shelves the library costs some £7,000 a year to run, with funding from Leicestershire County Council.

Lorraine said the money from the Heart of England Co-operative Society will be useful in giving the facility a significant improvement.
