Terrific treble for Goons

-

BOTH the Dry Logic Trophy for Division Two sides and the Holt Trophy for division one sides were determined last week at the George Ward Centre in Barwell.

The Holt Trophy between arch rivals G Ward A and Goons produced a real cracker.

Goons raced into a three sets to one lead only to be pegged back in the fifth when Jason Essex (GWA) fought off a strong challenge from Jason Woodfield to win in the fifth game 11-4 to bring the scores to 2-3 in favour of Goons.

Lucky Obi won the sixth set to put Goons four sets to two up.

G Ward were not done however when Essex (GWA) overcame a spirited Harry White (Goons), followed by the match of the night when Mark Perkins (GWA) playing some of his best table tennis of the season defeated Obi (Goons) who had lost only one match throughout the season before this defeat, again a very close match with Perkins winning in the fifth 11-7 to level the scores.

All rested on the final match between Derek Thompson (GWA) and Woodfield who used all his experience to win the set in three straight to take the match and the trophy by five sets to four.

Goons having now taken the double with league and cup win, move on for the triple next week in the Team Handicap challenge.

The Dry Logic final was somewhat of a let-down as Cat H easily defeated Queen’s Barwell by eight sets to one.

Both Steve Crutchley and Ian Knight were unbeaten by an opponent with Chris Taylor (Queen’s) collecting a good win in defeating Ben Rhodes(Cat H) in a five game thriller 11-5 in the fifth.

Goons duly completed the triple when they took the Table Tennis Team Handicap Challenge.

Their opponents in the Team Challenge were Cat A but Goons showed just why they are the outstanding team this season, raced into a four sets to one lead before closing it out when Harry White (Goons) defeated Pete Jamieson (Cat A) 31-21 to win the match.

The final event of the season was the Hinckley Junior Cham- pionships recently held at the George Ward Centre in Barwell, there was good entry from across the borough with players from Market Bosworth, Barlestone and Barwell taking part.

There was a surprise in the group round of the Under 13’s when Alana Richardson beat top ranked Edward Brown 11-4, 9-11 & 7-11 to go through to the semi-finals against James Walker and in a very tight affair she came out on top 11-7 in the fifth game to secure a final place. In the other semi-final Ollie Wynne took on Brown only to go down 5-11, 7-11 and 10-12.

Brown exacted revenge for his early defeat by beating Richardson in three straight to retain his title.

In the under 16’s event there was another very close game between Callum Dale and Matt Wynne, in a see saw match Dale secured the final spot winning 11-8 in the fifth game.

O Wynne could find no way by E Brown in the other semifinal losing in three straight.

Brown now into his stride comfortably saw off Dale again in three straight games to collect his second trophy of the night.

The Girls Open Final saw youngster Freya Wynne play out of her skin to secure an unexpected win over firm favourite Alan Richardson snatching victory by three games to two.

The Junior Open saw Adam Pettit defending the title he has won for the past three years; in his semi-final he defeated O Wynne in three games to reach the final.

E Brown took four games to secure his place against C Dale.

The final was close but Pettit took it 11-9, 11-8 & 11-7 against Brown to lift the trophy once again
