A celebration of nursing and care
THE 7th annual Nurses Day service was held at St Mary’s Church, Hinckley.
The congregation included local dignitaries, former and current nurses with their families and friends, RCN members and members of the community.
This special service, which celebrates all nurses, was led by Pauline Cummins, Reader Minister who during the service reflected on the lives of inspirational nurses such as Edith Cavell.
The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Peter Wallace attended on his first official engagement and was accompanied by his consort, Mary Patrick as he addressed the congregation with personal insights of the health profession.
Guest speaker Katie Dutton, student nurse and RCN Student Information Officer gave a moving address of her personal experience of sepsis and how this, together with the nurses who cared for her, influenced her decision to become a nurse.
Musical items from ‘The Savior of the World’ A Sacred Cantata were performed by the Nuneaton LDS Choir.
Event organiser Shirley Iliffe, member of the RCN Leicestershire and Rutland Branch and retired nurse from Hinckley and District Hospital was delighted with the attendance and uplifting atmosphere of the service.
After the service the traditional cheese, biscuits and Schloer provid- ed a time to chat and reflect with current nurses and those who have retired, who together have provided many years’ service caring for other in the community.
Nurses Day, supported by the Royal College of Nursing, is marked internationally on May 12, the birthday of pioneering Victorian nurse Florence Nightingale.
