Children’s centre garden revamp

-

YOUNGSTERS and volunteers from businesses teamed up to transform the garden of a Hinckley children’s centre.

Year 8 pupils from Hinckley Academy helped employees from Hinckley and Rugby Building Society and Checkprint to raise beds and sheds at Hinckley East Sure Start in Granville Road.

Both companies sent three volunteers, including Marie Barnes, marketing co-ordinator at the building society.

She said: “It was a great day and a lovely opportunity to meet people from another local business who are as dedicated to Leicestershire Cares as we are.

“There was a lot to get done and it was hard work, but we were really pleased with what we were able to achieve in just one day.

“It was such a lovely project to be involved in and we hope the centre’s users are pleased with the garden’s new look.”

Mandy French, head of Year 8 at Hinckley Academy, said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

“Word has quickly got around with all of their positive comments and I have lots of volunteers for future projects.

“We are extremely proud of the effort and commitment shown by all of the students who took part.

“It was a fantastic day with a great team all round.”

The event was one of several challenges across Leicestershire and Rutland going on as part of Leicestershire Cares Week 2018, with dozens of vol- unteers helping at charities and community centres.

The students will be putting their team challenge experience into their CVs, which they worked on at a previous Leicestershire Cares event when business volunteers helped them to start preparing for life after school.
