Go wild this month at series of events
PRESENTERS of programmes such as Springwatch and The Really Wild Show are urging families to do something wild every day this month.
Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust is running a 30 Days Wild Challenge, launched with a family fun nature day at Abbey Park in Leicester.
Throughout the month, including the Big Wild Weekend of June 16 and 17, there will be events throughout the two counties, including badger watches, guided walks, osprey cruises at Rutland Water and an open day at Holwell Nature Reserves near Melton.
In addition to trust events there will be a Bioblitz around Woodhouse Eaves, plus a Wild Weekend at Bradgate Park. Nationally 55,000 people, schools and workplaces, have already signed up to go wild in June. The Wildlife Trusts hope to beat last year when an estimated 250,000 took part.
Naturalist, TV presenter and Rutland Water nature reserve Birdfair favourite Nick Baker is one of the stars backing The Wildlife Trusts’ national nature challenge to do something wild every day during June.
He said: “Ever since I was a small boy I’ve been fascinated by wildlife and the natural world. It’s so important for us all to have regular contact with nature – I know it makes me feel happier and healthier.
“Taking the 30 Days Wild challenge is a brilliant way to reconnect with your own wild side – so why not get out and go wild this June?”
Springwatch presenter Gillian Burke said: “Try 30 Random Acts of Wildness in 30 Days. I’d love people to connect with the wildlife around them – I think lots of people don’t know how to do it… this is the perfect way to start and discover how you can make a difference. Where will your wild adventure take you? I might dance in a downpour!”
