Tiger Jack’s Big First World War Weekend

-

FOLLOWING the success of a similar venture in 2017, Hinckley and District Museum will be again staging a whole weekend concentrating on the First World War.

It is called Tiger Jack’s Big First World War Week-End and is on Saturday July 14 and Sunday July 15.

The museum will be creating extra displays in addition to the two current displays on the war. The displays will include material that has been donated to the museum’s collection in the last year.

The museum’s final exhibition commemorating 100 years since the end of the war is called “A Farewell to Arms” and looks at the aftermath of the conflict as felt in the town. The museum presents two pieces of research into the names on the war memorial and a complete list of those who served from the town, including both men and women.

The local branch of the Western Front Association will be present with experts on hand to help people with any questions they have about any aspect of the war. The highlight of the weekend will undoubtedly be the presence of a First World War interpreter and educator John Overton, who is originally from Hinckley but will be travelling to the museum from his home in North Wales to present his material.

John specialises in material that has been made age appropriate for children and engages them in what it was like to be involved in the war.

There will be a chance for dressing up. For the adults there will be excerpts from his one man show “Tiger Jack” at 11.30am and 2pm on Saturday and 2.30pm on Sunday. The performances will take place, weather permitting in the museum garden.

Commenting on the weekend, Mrs Ann Crabtree, muse- um Chairman said: “We are delighted to welcome John back to Hinckley. His material is eyecatching and John will give engaging explanations of all aspects of the war. This will be a great chance for the kids to learn something about the war in an exciting way”.

The museum stages a range of new exhibits each year, so there is always something new to explore, discover and enjoy. There is a lovely tea room and a small gift shop area selling souvenirs at reasonable prices. The museum is open from 10am to 3.30pm on Saturday and from 2pm to 4.30pm on Sunday. Entrance to the museum costs £1 for adults and 50p for children.
