Then it’s off to the plaice station...

A pair of policemen bought chips to share with a hungry “suspected illegal immigrant” after finding him on a motorway.

The officers took a picture of themselves with the man who said he had not eaten for days.

One of them wrote on social media: “Male found on motorway suspected to be an illegal immigrant into the UK.

“He’s not eaten for days and we’ve not eaten for hours, so we’ve all shared some fine English cuisine... a bag of chips!”

After sharing the picture, the officers, from Leicestershire’s Road Policing Unit, were largely commended for their actions.

The image shows the two law enforcers in high-vis uniforms and the man behind them in the police car. They are all holding blue plastic forks from a chip shop. One person wrote: “That is really lovely to see. “No matter what his situation is he is still a human and I love how you are treating him as one.”

Another said: “Brilliant. Stories like this are few and far between on here so it makes reading one more special.

“Kindness, humanity, generosity and, of course, the great choice of the fine cuisine. You should be proud of yourselves. We are.”

Many others described their actions as “compassionate” and told the pair “well done”.

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police confirmed officers had found the 35-year-old man on the M1.

They said: “We were called around about 6.55pm.

“It was a report of a man sitting on the barrier of the M1 motorway.

“He wasn’t seen near a car so there were concerns as to why he was there.

“Officers attended and following inquiries a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.”
