Potter smashes biggest six of career to seal trophy win

-

WOLVEY Cricket Club made their sixth appearance in the Tommy Hilditch Cup Final against Atherstone Town Cricket Club.

The game is traditionally held at the Attleborough Cricket ground in Nuneaton.

Atherstone Town batted first and they suffered an early loss when Robert Hawkins bowled opener E. Smith for four.

On a wicket that was proving difficult to bat on, number 3 batsmen J. Smith struck a belligerent 61, which included some very lusty blows.

He was briefly supported by Privett (15) who was brilliantly run out by Jordan Moore with a direct hit.

The Atherstone innings ended with a flurry of catches from skiers and three quick wickets for Jevon Thorpe with the total finishing at 122 for seven wickets.

The highlight of the first innings for Wolvey was an excellent opening spell from Tom Verow whose five overs only cost twelve runs.

Joe Smith-Walker and Jordan Moore opened up for Wolvey, putting on 28 for the first wicket.

Sharpish bowler Wrigley was causing some early problems and bowled Smith-Walker for 14.

Moore and Natvianda continued the chase but Wolvey were soon falling behind the clock against some difficult bowling.

Captain Liam Phillips came in with the loss of Moore (11) and struck a brisk 23 before he was bowled by Kinson.

Natvianda (15) soon followed and Wolvey now needed some quick runs.

They were provided by Vivan Shah (23) and Robert Hawkins (22) who only faced 10 balls each.

They both departed in I. Jeff’s first over, the 16th of the innings.

The game was now in the balance.

Atherstone brought Wrigley back on for the 17th over with Wolvey needing 13 to win.

Jevon Thorpe and Zak Potter hit a couple of singles, Thorpe a boundary and then young Potter hit the biggest six of his career into the flats to win the game for Wolvey.

This was Wolvey’s third success in this competition in recent years.

Jevon Thorpe won the Man of the Match award and Captain Liam Phillips stepped up to accept the magnificent trophy.
