School’s trophy cabinet gets some additions
DESFORD Community Primary School pupils have a summer of celebrations to make after bagging themselves several new additions to their trophy cabinet.
Pupils and staff from the school have enjoyed success in a number of games in recent months, with one staff member describing it as an ‘exceptional year of sport’.
The school were crowned Champions in June, at the annual Area Athletics competition, which was dubbed as ‘the Olympics for schools’.
Thirty pupils represented the Kirkby Road school in a number of relay, long jump, throwing, sprinting and middle distance running events, seeing them fight off their rivals to take the crown for the first time in its history.
PE and School Sport Leader, Dan Chapman, said of the victory: “To triumph at such a massive and prestigious event is a marvellous achievement for the school and testimony to the hard work, commitment and determination of every single member of its squad.
“There were some amazing performances on the day and I am immensely proud.”
Earlier in the year, ten children from years five and six saw off the challenge of eight other local schools to seal the victory in the Bosworth Education Partnership (BEP) tournament.
This success was shortly followed by the school’s year three and four tag rugby team, who also won at the BEP competition before being crowned champions at a Bosworth Academy event in April.
The succesful streak continued for the school as a squad of year six girls fin- ished third overall in a ten-team primary school’s football league, with their male counterparts narrowly missing out on the top spot after getting through to the final.
To sum up the school’s overall success and trophy haul, Mr Chapman added, “All of the children involved in this - not to mention the staff, parents and coaches that have supoprted them - should be incredibly proud of themselves.
“Desford Primary School is now well and truly on the sporting map,”
