Police appeal for Great War families

THE COUNTY’S police force will be paying their respects and marking the centenary of the First World War during a Remembranc­e Day memorial event at Force Headquarte­rs this November.

Surviving family members of serving Leicesters­hire police officers who lost their lives while on duty during either world war are being invited to attend the event, which takes place on Friday November 9.

However, Leicesters­hire Police is still actively trying to trace descendant­s of 20 officers from the city, county and Rutland who died as a result of the war.

Chief Constable Simon Cole, Deputy Chief Constable Rob Nixon, Assistant Chief Constable Julia Debenham, police officers and staff will be in attendance at the event to pay their respects.

Mr Cole said: “It is important to the force to mark the centenary commemorat­ions. We hold a gathering every year in our memorial garden to commemorat­e Remembranc­e Day but there is a different significan­ce this year.

“We are extending the invitation to the families of those fallen officers to join us as a way of expressing our gratitude and solidarity for their bravery and sacrifice. We are pleased to have already been in contact with ten families who have said they would like to join us - making the event even more poignant.” JAKE Bugg will headline the Godiva Festival’s Friday night lineup, organisers have announced.

The Lightning Bolt songwriter will close the first day of the Godiva Festival on Friday August 31.

The event takes place just a short drivefromH­inckleyatt­heWarMemor i al Park in Coventry.

H is latest album Hearts That Strain was released in September 2017 and he recently recorded a song called Waiting with Noah Cyrus, sister of Miley.

Bugg said: “I’m looking forward to playing Godiva Festival with some of my favourite artists on the same bill.”

Councillor Abdul Khan, Coventry Council’s deputy leader and Cabinet member for events, said: “It’s exciting that we can announce our Friday headliner and two additional acts for this year’s Godiva as the build-up continues to our 20th anniversar­y. I know many people will already have the dates in their diaries and I’m sure this year’s event will be as popular as ever as we continue the build up to UK City of Culture 2021.”

Also confirmed for the festival are Rae Morris and Kyle Falconer.

Falconer was a founder member of The View, and the band signed their first record deal when he was just 18 years old. Their debut album Hats Off To The Buskers, with hit single Same Jeans, went straight to number one in January 2007 and was later nominated for a Mercury Prize.

After five hit albums, a Mercury Prize nomination and countless sold-out shows with The View, the band’s frontman Kyle Falconer released his debut single Poor Me in June. Lancastria­n singer-songwriter Rae Morris best known for her singles Grow, Love Again and DO IT. Pit out her second album Someone Out There, in January 2018. She has collaborat­ed with artists such as Bombay Bicycle Club, Clean Bandit, and Kaytranada.

Both Kyle and Rae will perform in Saturday’s Rhythm Tent on September 1.

Other acts booked include rapper, singer and songwriter Professor Green and Jonas Blue, a DJ and songwriter who peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart in 2015 with his cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 single “Fast Car”, remaining in the top ten for 11 weeks.

Blood Red Shoes are an alternativ­e rock duo from Brighton, who have released four studio albums and are best known for their single “Cold”, which was released in 2012.

Little Comets are an indie-rock trio from Tyne and Wear, with their third album “Hope Is Just A State Of The Mind” reaching number 31 in the UK top 40 album chart. They are best known for their debut single, “One Night In October” which they released in 2009. All of the artists will be appearing on Saturday’s Main Stage, alongside R&B singer Gabrielle, who was announced previously.

The event normally takes place earlier in the year but the BBC Radio 2 Big Weekend came to the same venue in May.

This featured Liam Gallagher, Snow Patrol and many other singers for a fantastic two-day festival.

The festival will take place from August 31 to September 2 at the city’s War Memorial Park.
