-

A STUDENT from Burbage raised £1,700 for a disabled youth sports charity over the course of her placement year.

Sarah Abraham, 21, smashed her £1,500 target for good cause Wooden Spoon, helping pay for a new sensory room.

The De Montfort University student ran the London Marathon as part of her fundraising efforts, completing the race in the 23C heat in 6 hours 23 minutes.

She said: “It was tough. I got really bad cramp and had to have three sports massages on the route.

“Hopefully I have inspired a few other people to give it a go.

Wooden Spoon provides facilities such as specialist playgrounds to help schools get disabled students into sports, with a particular emphasis on rugby.

Sarah studies marketing and business at university and recently completed her placement year working as a marketing specialist for FedEx in Nuneaton.

A number of workers for the company run in the marathon each year for a designated charity, with Sarah running alongside her Nuneaton colleague Jenni.

She said:” “There’s not a lot of other charities that do this.

“I enjoy sports myself and it has helped me with things in my life, so it was great to be able to give back.”

FedEx gave Sarah an award in recognition of her hard work.

She is spending her Summer break travelling around Asia and Indoneisa but will be taking on another fitness test in September, taking on the National Three Peaks Challenge.

She said of her return ot university next year: “It’s going to be different from working all the time, going back to the academic world. I’m looking forward to the independence of living away from home.

“I have learnt about myself from a whole year in the industry.

“It allows you to explore what you like and don’t like in different areas.”
