DAVE Callaghan became the first angler to win both the Wednesday night series and then the grand final in the thirty year history of Measham’s Mid Week League fished on the Ashby canal around Snarestone.

In the final fished along the Globe length, Dave weighed 6lb 14ozs of bream to record the historic win by just 1oz, with runner up Simon Roberts making a similar catch that weighed 6lb 13ozs. John Johnson finished third with 5lb 15ozs. Section Winners were Hubert Noar with 4lb 14ozs and Geoff Taylor with 3lb 13ozs.

Saturday’s Lychgate Fisheries Open produced yet another win for Andy Findlay. Drawn on peg 52 “The Fin “scored a run away win weighing 123lb 2ozs. Runner up Ian Shirley weighed 76lb while Steve Brindley finished third with a 66lb 12oz catch.

Mayne’s Midweek Open was won by Alby Behl who caught from the start using sweet corn and pellets fished in the margins to finish with 60lb 9ozs. Result; Pool One, Winner Alby Behl peg 32. Pool Two Winner; Darryl Moore peg 3, 50lb 7ozs. Pool Three, Winner; Dave Bolton, peg 43, 24lb.

It was back to winning way’s in Lychgate Fisheries Sunday Open for “Sunday specialist” Dan Eaton. With the average weight of the top ten around 77lbs, it was Dan that took the honours weighing 108lb 7ozs from peg 34.

Just one fish behind was Dave Armstrong who finished with 104lb 4ozs from peg 42.Lee Farmer came third with a 90lb 2ozs catch.

With the bream not showing in Shackersto­nes Open fished along the Populars, catches were unexpected­ly low with both the top two anglers catching a big perch to boost their weights. Roger Benn’s perch was around the 1lb mark which together with some small fish gave him a win- ning 2lb 11oz catch. Kev Milne finish second with his perch slightly smaller, and again with some small fish to finish with 2lb 8ozs. Doug Dimbleby made an all small roach catch weighing 2lb 1ozs to finish third.

Lychgate Fisheries Wednesday Open was won by Rich Wells from peg 46. Fishing sweet corn in the margins Rich caught eleven carp that weighed 82lb plus around 5lbs of small fish for a winning 87lb 9oz total. Runner Up Paul Bates included 31lb of bream in his 81lb 10ozs catch from peg 26. While Dave Armstrong included 25lb of bream in his 78lb 14oz catch.

Higham Lane’s Wednesday evening Open was a battle of the Milne family. “young” Darren took the honours with a 76lb 11oz catch from peg 19 while “papa” Kev finished second from peg 21 with 58lb 9ozs. Mark Ward was third with 48lb 11ozs.

The first Round of the Bert & Betty Andrews Memorial contest between Shackersto­ne and Ibstock was fished along the canal at Hags Lane and the Monthills. Top individual was Shackersto­ne’s Pete Billington with a 4lb 10oz catch from Hags Lane.

The inform Geoff Taylor finished second and was top weight on the Monthills with a 4lb 9oz catch. Ibstock’s Les Peterson came third with a 3lb 10oz catch. Section winners were; Monthills; John Gamble 3lb 2ozs. Hags Lane; Doug Dimbleby 3lb 4ozs. In the team result Shackersto­ne weighed 25lb 1ozs to Ibstocks 16lb 4ozs.

Thursday’s Higham Lane Open was won by Andy Findlay who used both pellet and method tactics on peg 23 to catch 96lb 11ozs. Rich Wells came second with 65lb 12ozs with Chris Whyte taking third place with 57lb 11ozs.

With the River Avon at it’s lowest level for some years Plough Angling Clubs contest at Ryton was rock hard. Mick Durrant landed two good perch and some small fish to win with 3lb 4ozs from peg 34. Vinc Kingham landed a big chub and a few minnows to take second place with 3lb 2ozs. Colin Saunders finished third with 2lb 4ozs of small fish.

Higham Lane Fishery have an Open match every Thursday, draw 9am.

The Pete Hogg Memorial Series on the canal starts this Saturday. Draw for this first match is at the Globe Inn Snarestone at 1pm.

Lychgate Fisheries have an Open match this Saturday, draw 9.15am.

Brookfield have an Open match at Stoke Golding this Sunday, draw 9am.

Measham have another “Away Day” to the Coventry Canal at Alvercote. Draw 8am at the Sam Barlow pub.

Maynes Lake’s have an Open match every Wednesday, draw 10am.

Lychgate Fisheries have an Open match every Wednesday, draw 9.15am.
